Speaker Series: Will Iredale – Churchill’s Pirates
Churchill’s Pirates tells the remarkable and largely forgotten story of the Royal Naval Patrol Service (RNPS), often described as a “navy within a navy”. Formed from fishermen, trawlermen, and civilian sailors, this extraordinary force became one of Britain’s most important yet overlooked contributions to victory in the Second World War.
More than 70,000 men and women served in the RNPS, operating over 6,000 vessels in some of the most dangerous waters of the war. Their vital work protecting Britain’s coasts, clearing mines, escorting convoys, and keeping essential shipping routes open came at a heavy cost. Over 3,200 personnel lost their lives, and no branch of the Royal Navy suffered a higher proportion of ships damaged or sunk by enemy action.
Drawing on first-hand accounts from veterans, original documents, personal papers, and previously unseen archival material, Churchill’s Pirates shines a light on the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of these men and women. It is a story of ordinary people undertaking extraordinary duties, often in the shadows of the better-known naval campaigns, but playing a crucial role in securing Allied victory.
